Everyone’s always complaining about those annoying invasive species ruining the ecosystem. Well, here’s your chance to do something about it, virtually at least! In ‘Grazers’ by Snauts for the Sega Master System, your mission is to hunt down invasive grazer species to help vegetation recover and thrive.
THE SILENCE OF THE GRASS
Spanning 12 challenging levels, each presents a unique task that tests your strategic thinking and quick reflexes. You’ll need to plan every move carefully, as moving too far backward can give the herd a chance to recuperate. The gameplay revolves around controlling the grazers’ spawn and die-off cycles. Each level is a puzzle where you must figure out the best spots to chase the grazers, as they reappear and get drawn to newly grown grass. The first level alone took us over 25 minutes to clear, and we had to soothe our arms afterward. But hearing that level complete music made it all worth it! The game creator shared: “I wrote a simulation-like game inspired by Conway’s Game of Life, with puzzle elements from Sokoban for ZX Spectrum, but later I was able to port it to the Sega Master System”.
The clever mechanic of managing grazer populations with limited moves makes Grazers a fantastic game. It’s amazing how much Snauts has accomplished with just one clever mechanic. This game truly showcases what can be done with ingenuity of the Sega Master System. It works perfectly on Mekaw, a dedicated Sega emulator supporting Master System, and RetroArch, a versatile multi-system emulator with the PicoDrive core.
Conclusion
Originally for ZX-Spectrum 48K and later ported to Sega Master System, MSX, and C64, Grazers is a delightful mix of strategy and nostalgia. It offers hours of engaging gameplay, with a concept that is honestly unique. Are you ready to take on invasive species and save the day? Can you handle the herd?
