If you put a snail in a maze, chances are it would get lost and take its sweet time finding its way — just like in ‘Snail Maze II’ for Sega Genesis by Safety Stoat Studios. This unofficial 16-bit sequel to the built-in classic adds a modern flair with a column-
scrolling background, pre-rendered 3D- looking sprites, and even voice samples.

SNAIL AND STEADY WINS THE RACE

In Snail Maze II, you need to get the banana, avoid getting exploded, and don’t run out of time-slime. Your time-slime, visible on the right side of the screen, depletes as you navigate the maze. The music is infectious, providing a thumping soundtrack that keeps you rocking as you guide your snail. The goal is simple: navigate through the maze, avoid enemy attacks, and reach the banana. But beware — the bombs don’t just pose a direct threat; they also destroy parts of the maze, only adding to the overall challenge. Technically, this game is impressive. It’s a Sega Genesis/Mega Drive-compatible ROM, which works on real hardware using a flash cart or in emulation. Genesis Plus GX is recommended for the best emulation experience.

For those nostalgic for the original 1986 Snail Maze, the gameplay may bring back memories of navigating a small orange snail with a yellow shell through a blue maze, racing against time. This classic game was simple but not without its challenges, requiring players to be smart. Each level presented a new maze, while the straightforward controls made it an enduring favourite, capturing the essence of early video gaming.

Conclusion

Snail Maze II retains the nostalgic charm of the original while introducing modern enhancements. It offers a trip down memory lane, but a fresh challenge gives you something new to enjoy. And just when you think you’re making progress, watch out for that crab-like enemy.
