Does the name ‘Cecconoid’ ring a bell? Well, it’s a tribute to Raffaele Cecco’s classic game ‘Cybernoid’ on the Spectrum. In this 8-bit inspired, twin-stick shooter, you pilot a small spacecraft tasked with rescuing the starship Equinox from hordes of malevolent robots.
EYE OF THE EQUINOX
Originally released for PC, Android, and iOS back in 2019, Cecconoid draws inspiration from classics such as the arcade shooter ‘Robotron’ and Hewson Consultants’ Cybernoid. Programming wise, Cecconoid excels. Everything is smooth: collisions, controls, visual effects — all flawless. Soundwise, with Hoffman at the helm, quality is guaranteed. The modplay routines are clever, squeezing tracks into memory with ease. The monochromatic graphic style is charming, with particle explosions that feel fresh and innovative. The game offers a challenging experience, enhanced by CD32 joypad controls for precise movement and shooting. A system of achievements boosts replayability, though some may find the game a tad short, craving more levels. We certainly craved more.
One standout feature is the particle engine, particularly impressive when unleashing strong firepower in densely packed areas — every pixel breaks down into a satisfying explosion across the screen. Moreover, Cecconoid doesn’t stop at one game as it includes ‘Eugatron,’ inspired by Llamatron, but with a faster pace and tighter controls. Both games go well together, offering a double dose of retro-inspired gameplay and fun.

Conclusion
For ones seeking a shooter filled with secrets, an electrifying soundtrack, and addictive high-score challenges, Cecconoid can’t be missed. Grab a copy as soon as you can and fasten your seat belts for a rip-roaring journey through retro gaming excellence.
