We at BrewOtaku have a soft spot for light-hearted games. Therefore, delving into ‘Quokka Wokka’ by voxel was almost a no-brainer. With its catchy name and Bubble Bobble-inspired gameplay, this title has leaf-munching fun that’s sure to bring a slight smile to your face.
“Always Be My Baby Quokka”
Quokka Wokka is a single-screen arcade platformer designed for GBA Jam 2024. The premise is simple: guide your adorable quokka through ten different screens, gobbling up leaves and tossing your quokka babies at foes. Amazed? Real-life quokkas throw their young at predators to escape, but here, your baby quokkas stun the enemies, turning them into tasty fruit once you give them a solid kick. The game is perfect for younger players, but adults can enjoy it too. The controls are easy to grasp, and we instantly took it like a dolphin to a body of water. Each level presents its own unique challenge, but if you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed or want to breeze through, there’s even a cheat mode to skip levels. Developed as voxel’s first foray into Game Boy Advance development, Quokka Wokka is intentionally simple, drawing inspiration from classics like Bubble Bobble, Rodland, and Rainbow Islands.
It’s a pick-up-and-play experience that’s easy to dive into. But hey, collecting all the letter bonuses in each level could still offer a bit of a test!
The graphics are super cute, but there could have been space for more. The catchy tunes were composed in Milkytracker, adding an extra layer of joy. For those who find themselves hooked on Quokka Wokka, voxel is open to feedback on what a longer version could include. So, give it a whirl and see if it tickles your retro fancy.
