At BrewOtaku, we are a small, independent team dedicated to promoting the homebrew gaming scene. To make the continued production of our magazine and video content possible, we utilise assistive AI tools.
Why we use these tools:
-
Operational Reality & Creative Balance:
We acknowledge that the use of AI is a sensitive topic. We share the concerns regarding its impact on the creative industry and remain committed to a transparent, human-led approach that respects the balance between technology and traditional artistry. -
Extending the Homebrew Spirit:
Independent publishing operates within significant resource constraints. We approach our workflow as a ‘homebrew’ challenge in its own right: utilising modern tools to innovate within our limits without compromising our editorial integrity. - The “Human-in-the-Loop”:
We do not treat AI as an automated solution. Every asset is the result of a rigorous process involving human direction, manual intervention, and creative oversight. Our team acts as ‘pilots,’ ensuring every output aligns with the values of the homebrew community. -
Traditional Talent:
We deeply admire professional creativity. To demonstrate this respect, we prioritise traditional artists for our cover pages, ensuring human talent receives the highest visibility. While we use technology to fill production gaps, our platform remains a dedicated space for encouraging human creativity through editorial coverage.
Human-Led Curation & Research:
Behind every page is a dedicated team of enthusiasts. While we utilise technology to augment our workflow, the heart, soul, and expertise of the magazine remain entirely human. We maintain final oversight of all published material and, as a project run by people, we focus on rigorous manual reviews to maintain professional standards. While we strive for precision, our human-led process remains dedicated to continuous improvement.
-
Human Curation:
Every game featured is hand-selected by our editors. -
Human Research:
All historical facts and technical data are verified through manual research and interviews. -
Human Voice:
Our reviews and editorials are written by people. We do not use AI to generate opinions or editorial perspectives.
Concrete Use of AI:
To ensure accountability, we apply strict human oversight to every automated process:
-
Visual Assets:
We design generative AI backdrops for magazine articles using procedural tools. While we previously utilised these tools for YouTube thumbnails, as of 18 March 2026, all thumbnail designs are produced without generative AI. - Audio Assets:
We craft music for our YouTube intros and outros using tools with a pattern-based interface that require manual interaction and trial and error to produce tracks.
-
Editorial Standards:
To assist our small team, every article undergoes AI-assisted proofreading to ensure grammatical precision and stylistic clarity. -
Content Refinement:
While all articles are human-authored, we occasionally use AI to refine text for better flow, ensuring our articles are clear and accessible.
Supporting the Community:
Our main focus is to promote homebrew developers. We prove this commitment by releasing all magazine issues older than one year to the public for free as digital PDFs, ensuring the work of these creators remains accessible to all.
